Planning a bivouac, a trek, or just a weekend in the wild? Never underestimate the importance of good lighting. I still remember a moonless camping night when, lacking a reliable light, I ended up cooking pasta... by phone flashlight. Not ideal, and definitely not safe!
Since then, I’ve learned how to choose between a headlamp and a lantern, depending on the situation. Here’s a little guide to help you see clearly (pun totally intended).
Headlamp: Compact, Handy, and Essential
If you can only bring one light source, make it a headlamp. It keeps your hands free, adjusts easily, and follows you everywhere—night hikes, reading in the tent, outdoor cooking…
Best for when you:
-
Hike or bike at night
-
Go bivouacking or lightweight camping
-
Need a mobile, directional light
What to check before buying:
-
Lumens (brightness): 200–400 lumens is enough for most uses. Go higher for mountain trails.
-
Battery life: USB rechargeable or replaceable batteries? Long battery life is a big plus.
-
Light modes: high/low white, red (for night vision), flashing, etc.
My personal favourite: the Petzl Actik Core – powerful, lightweight, and rechargeable.
Lantern: To Light Up Your Camp and Set the Mood
A lantern is ideal for lighting a fixed area: inside the tent, the camp table, or your chill-out zone by the fire. It spreads softer, broader light, often adjustable and easy to hang.
Best for when you:
-
Camp with family or friends
-
Want ambient lighting for evenings
-
Stay in one place for a while
What to check before buying:
-
Size and weight: some lanterns are collapsible or ultra-compact
-
Power source: battery, replaceable batteries, or solar-powered
-
Bonus features: USB port for charging your phone, hanging hooks, water resistance
Pro tip: a small solar lantern can hang on your backpack all day and light up your night!
So, Headlamp or Lantern? Why Not Both!
If you’re going on a trek or travelling light, a headlamp is essential. But for a bit more comfort at camp, a lantern feels like a real luxury. And honestly, both fit easily in your pack!
