Gear Check-Up: What to Keep, What to Replace?

Gear Check-Up: What to Keep, What to Replace?

Before heading out on your next adventure, it’s time for a quick outdoor gear check-up!
Your equipment may have seen better days… or might just need a little update.

Here’s how to sort it all out efficiently: what to keep, what to replace?

1. Make a Full Inventory

Lay out all your gear on a big surface: tent, backpack, boots, cooking gear, technical clothing…
A quick visual check will help you spot:

  • What’s worn out or damaged

  • What’s missing

  • What you never actually used

2. Inspect Each Piece Carefully

Here are some essential checkpoints:

  • Tent: Are the seams still sealed? Poles intact? Are zippers working properly?

  • Backpack: No wear on the straps or hip belt?

  • Shoes: Are the soles still grippy? No cracks or splits?

  • Clothing: Are the membranes still waterproof? No tears?

Pro tip: Don't forget to check your first-aid kit and portable chargers too!

3. What to Keep?

Keep anything that:

  • Is still in good condition

  • Fits your current outdoor style (light hiking, backpacking, trail running...)

Bonus: sentimental favorites can stay too — as long as they're still reliable!

4. What to Replace?

Replace anything that:

  • Is damaged beyond repair

  • No longer suits your new outdoor activities (for example, switching from a heavy family tent to an ultralight solo one)

  • Has become uncomfortable after years of use

Investing in new gear also means more comfort, better safety, and often a lighter pack!

Good gear is the foundation of a great adventure!
Take the time to check, repair, or update your equipment before hitting the trails.
