How to Maintain Your Outdoor Gear After Winter

Spring is here! The days are getting longer, the trails are drying up, and nature is calling… But before you grab your backpack and head out, there’s one important step you shouldn’t skip:
Spring cleaning for your outdoor gear!

Here are some easy and effective tips to extend the life of your equipment and hit the trail with confidence.

1. Take everything out and inspect it

Start by laying out all your gear: backpack, tent, shoes, technical clothing, cookware, etc. Give everything a visual check: stains, mildew, damaged parts, stuck zippers, worn-out seams—don’t miss a thing!

2. Clean your technical clothing

Wash your waterproof jackets, fleeces, and hiking pants according to the label (usually cold or 30°C, with gentle detergent). No fabric softener—it can block breathable membranes! If needed, re-waterproof with a spray or special wash-in treatment.

3. Take care of your shoes

Brush off any dried mud, then wash with warm water and mild soap. Let them air dry, away from direct heat. After drying, apply the appropriate care product (leather balm, waterproofing spray, etc.) depending on the material.

4. Clean and air out your tent

Set it up in your garden, yard, or balcony. Wipe it down inside and out with a damp cloth. Check the poles, stakes, and seams. If it smells musty, let it air out for a full day. Make sure it’s completely dry before storing to avoid mildew.

5. Check your backpack

Vacuum out the inside, wipe the straps and back panel with a damp cloth. Test all zippers, straps, and clips. If it’s dirty, hand washing will do wonders.

6. Go through your accessories

Headlamp, stove, sleeping mat, trekking poles… Replace old batteries, test everything, reinflate or lubricate if needed. Better to check now than deal with issues on the trail!

7. Store smartly

Once everything is clean and dry, store your gear in a dry, ventilated place away from direct sunlight. Avoid sealed plastic bags—they can trap moisture.

And now?

Your gear is ready—and so are you! All that’s left is to plan your next adventures, with a lighter pack and peace of mind.
