Our Favourite Spring Hiking Spots

Our Favourite Spring Hiking Spots

There’s something magical about hiking in the spring. Nature slowly wakes up, birds are singing again, wildflowers blanket the trails… and the paths come back to life. At Baroudeur Camp, we love this season of renewal. So today, we’re taking you on a tour of our favourite spring hiking spots—the kind that get us out of bed with excitement, boots on and backpacks ready.

1. The Verdon Gorge and its Blooming Cliffs

Early April, the Verdon Gorge is pure magic. The turquoise water contrasts with the white cliffs, and the first wildflowers cling to the rocky edges. The Blanc-Martel trail, still quiet this time of year, is an absolute joy. Fresh air, epic views, and no crowds—just how we like it.

2. The Vercors and Its Awakening Meadows

This one’s a hidden favourite: in spring, the high plateaus of the Vercors are dotted with crocuses and primroses. The peace is almost surreal, and the early morning light makes the landscape glow. The Col du Rousset or the trails near Villard-de-Lans are perfect for a day hike filled with serenity.

3. The Cévennes in Gentle Mode

Not too hot yet, not too dry either... springtime in the Cévennes is a lush green dream. We love following the old transhumance paths, called drailles. If you’re lucky, you might spot sheep heading toward the highlands. Mont Aigoual or the Stevenson Trail are must-dos in this region.

4. The Wild Side of Fontainebleau Forest

Just an hour from Paris, this is our go-to for a quick nature escape. In March or April, trails are lined with wood anemones and bluebells, and the sandstone boulders glow golden in the late-day sun. It’s perfect for a gentle hike, a bit of bouldering, or just a mindful walk among the trees.

5. The Basque Country in Brilliant Green

When spring arrives on the Basque coast, everything bursts into color. The still-cool mountains are wrapped in neon green pastures. The Mondarrain loop or the trail up to La Rhune offers amazing views, a solid workout, and a chance to stop in a charming village for a slice of Basque cake.
