Spring Cleaning: Maintain Your Outdoor Equipment

Spring Cleaning: Maintain Your Outdoor Equipment

Spring is here. The days are getting longer, the trails are thawing, and the call of the wild is getting louder. But before you grab your tent, backpack, and hiking boots, it’s time for a little TLC: let’s give your outdoor gear a proper spring clean!

The Backpack: Empty, Brush, Air Out

Start with the basics: empty your backpack. That old snack crumb, a crumpled receipt, or forgotten blister patch—there’s always a surprise or two inside!

  • Use a soft brush to get rid of dust and debris.

  • Wipe down the straps with a damp cloth and mild soap.

  • Let it air dry in the shade to avoid damaging the materials.

Hiking Boots: A Little Spa Day

Your boots have covered many miles—time to show them some love:

  • Brush off any dried mud and rinse gently with lukewarm water (never hot).

  • Remove the laces and insoles for a full clean.

  • Once dry, apply a waterproofing treatment if needed.

  • Store them in a dry place, away from direct sunlight.

The Tent: A Full Check-Up

Pitch it in your yard or living room:

  • Shake out dust, twigs, or any tiny hitchhikers.

  • Inspect the seams, poles, and zippers.

  • Spot-clean any stains with a soft sponge.

  • Once completely dry, fold and store it in a breathable bag, loosely packed.

Sleeping Gear & Technical Textiles

  • Sleeping bag: open it, shake it out, and air it for a day. Clean it gently by hand or on a delicate machine cycle (check the care label).

  • Technical clothing: wash with a special detergent to preserve waterproof and breathable properties.

Don’t Forget the Small Stuff

  • Trekking poles: check the locks, clean the tips.

  • Stove: make sure it works and no residue is blocking the burner.

  • Headlamp: replace the batteries, wipe the lens clean.
