Last summer, while hiking in the Cévennes, I quickly realized that a simple cotton t-shirt wasn’t going to cut it. Sweat, chafing, discomfort… it wasn’t ideal. Since then, I’ve changed my ways. Breathable technical clothing has totally transformed the way I enjoy summer outdoors. If you also want to stay dry, comfy, and make the most of every hike or bivouac, here’s a tried-and-tested selection just for you!
1. Breathable Recycled Polyester T-Shirt (like Patagonia Capilene or Decathlon Forclaz)
Ultra-light, dries in a flash, and wicks away sweat without any odor: this has become my go-to essential. Perfect for day hikes or multi-day treks.
2. Long-Sleeve UV-Protective Shirt
Great for shielding yourself from the sun while staying ventilated. Brands like Columbia or Quechua offer lightweight models with back vents. Perfect for exposed trails or really hot days.
3. Stretch, Ventilated Hiking Shorts
With zippered pockets and ultra-flexible fabric, these are my summer best friends. Some models even feature mesh panels for extra airflow. Bonus: they dry super fast after a spontaneous dip in a stream!
4. Breathable Sports Bra or Technical Undergarment
We don’t talk about it enough, but good breathable underwear changes everything. No annoying seams, no sticky fabric—just comfort, even under a heavy pack.
5. Ultra-Light Windbreaker Jacket
Even in summer, a breeze or light rain can show up. A water-repellent and breathable jacket like the H&M Move Shell Jacket or Decathlon’s Raincut slips into any bag without taking up space.
Bonus Tip:
Always go for fabrics like recycled polyester, lightweight merino, or quick-dry blends. And steer clear of cotton, especially on longer hikes. It retains moisture and can cause irritation.
This summer, travel light but smart! The right clothing can seriously improve your time outdoors.
